Computer Repair: Time to Fix, or Upgrade To A New One?

The great part about technology is, well, it’s technology and that’s pretty cool unto itself. The not-so-great part is that it’s expensive to replace when it breaks. Whether it’s a computer, tablet, smartphone, or something else, nothing quite takes the wind out of your sails like malfunctioning or dead technology. The question is whether you should buy a completely new device, repair, or upgrade. While there are situations perfect for the first two options, we’re here to put the bug in your ear that trading in and upgrading might be the best choice of all.

The Problem with New

You already know the problem with new, right? It’s freaking expensive. Let’s say your laptop gives up the ghost and dies a horrible, lingering death. What are you going to do? Well, you could could take it outside and blast it to little bits with leftover fireworks. That might be psychologically rewarding in the short term but you’re still left with the need to replace it and you’re liable to have to cough up $500 to $1,000 to get you back in the style you’re accustomed to. If you’ve got that kind of money in spare couch change, more power to you, but what if – like so many of us – you’re surviving paycheck to paycheck?

The Upgrade Option

Computer repair is a less expensive option, depending on what the issue is, but it leaves you with a machine that is becoming more outdated by the second. Without getting too technical, let’s just say that a device you bought three years ago would seem positively arthritic were it to go toe-to-toe with a brand new machine. Which means you are wasting time waiting around for an older machine to carry out orders. Sorry. We didn’t make the rules. That’s just the way the game is played.

So, why go to the trouble of having old computers repaired? Good question, unless you get it repaired AND upgraded. Most computer stores – we’re not talking about the big box retailers, mind you, but rather the one operated by the neighborhood computer geek – will be glad to take a trade-in on a newer device or offer store credit towards an upgrade. That means you get to take advantage of the latest technology advances. Your work and play will be more efficient and, most importantly, it’ll be almost guaranteed cheaper than running out and buying a brand new model.

The Bottom Line

The question then becomes whether it’s ever better to buy a new device than have your old one repaired and upgraded? The answer is yes. No matter how great a laptop, tablet, or smartphone has performed, five years is about the top end of usefulness you’ll get out of it. If one thing goes wrong, there’s a good chance another malfunction won’t be far behind. All the repairs and upgrades in the world might be money down the drain. Just keep in mind that upgrading your RAM or hard drive could be all that’s needed to feel like you’ve switched to a finely tuned piece of equipment. Your best bet is to find a local computer nerd you trust and pick his or her brain.
