Water Damaged Iphone? DIY Tips To Fix it | Traverse City Repair

It happens all the time. An individual is out partying with their friends. They relax around the pool texting a friend and their phone slips through their hands and into the pool. Perhaps, the IPhone slips into the tub, shower, sink, or toilet. The surprising fact is that the phone is a bit more rugged than you might think. The phone is able to survive a quick dip in the water. However, a phone that is submerged in the water for more than several minutes, is another story. Here are a few DIY tips to fix your water damaged IPhone.

Don’t Panic

The first step is to take a breath, and quickly remove the phone out of the water. Turn the phone off, before more damage occurs. Now, take a look at the phone. Notice any signs of structural damage. For example, damage to the screen. Look for signs of water damage on the touch screen or corrosion around the edges. Open up the back and remove the Sim card. Set it aside in a safe, dry place. Give the phone a shake. Take a soft towel and dry off all of the accessible parts on the device.

Accessing Internal Parts Of The Device

A few DIY tips provided by some sites suggest that it’s a good idea to open up the internal part and check for more damage. Proceed with caution. It should be noted that accessing the internal parts of the device, invalidates your warranty. In addition, you might cause even more structural damage to the IPhone.

Try Rice

You’ve probably read or viewed videos about people fixing their water damaged phone with a bag of rice. Well, the fact is that rice will absorb the water out of the device. Therefore, there is substantial validity to this advice. Get a large bowl and place your damaged phone right in the middle of the bowl. Pour a bag of uncooked rice over your water damaged device. Make sure that the device is fully covered. Let the phone remain in the bowl, covered with rice for about 24 hours. After 24 hours, take the phone out of the rice and turn the device on. If it doesn’t work, place back in the rice bowl for another 24 hours, and give it another try. If the second attempt fails, time to seek professional help.

Other DIY Methods

Never toss out those little silica gel packs that are packaged with new shoes. They are great at removing moisture too. Wrap them around your phone and wait 24 hours for results. Another method used to dry out a wet phone, is to place the device in an airtight drawer or cupboard for 24 hours. Some people do crazy things to dry their damaged phone. Here is a tip. Avoid trying to dry the phone on a radiator or holding it over hot flames on a stove. Also, avoid running a hair dryer over the phone.
